Auto-discovery Broken with iTunes 10.5 for Windows

with 8 comments

It looks like iTunes 10.5 for Windows breaks HippoRemote’s ability to automatically discover your Windows PC. Specifically, the new version of Bonjour that is installed with iTunes 10.5 only works briefly before failing. Hopefully, Apple will issue a fix soon.

In the meantime, a temporary band-aid is to uninstall the existing version of Bonjour and to install an older version from the link below.

Bonjour for Windows 2.0.2

This has restored auto-discovery on my Windows PCs, but I’m guessing it may cause some incompatibilities with iTunes 10.5. I haven’t noticed any, but I’m not a heavy iTunes users. If you run into any issues, leave a comment or send me a support email.

  2. Can’t you update the app to work with the new version of Bonjour? I paid $5.50 for this app but it doesn’t work properly because I have iTunes updated???

I can connect to my PC using the IP address but it takes about 5 attempts (comes up with ‘Connection Error’ most of the time). Once connected it works for a while then will randomly freeze so I have to disconnect then go through the whole process of connecting again.

Please update the app as downgrading Bonjour looks like it will cause more problems.

  3. I tend to agree with Richie here… I have been having a ton of problems connecting to my PC with hippo… and noticed that the desktop app hadn’t been updated since 2010, which made me come try to figure out if I was behind the times or not. Apparently, I am, but so’s the software.

  4. @richie, @Dave

There’s no update I can do to fix bugs in latest Bonjour. This is something that only Apple can resolve. Every app that relies on Bonjour will eventually become undiscoverable if left running long enough, including iTunes. The downgrading workaround is solid, though. I’ve been using the older Bonjour on my PCs for weeks now and haven’t run into any problems.

Try rebooting your PC. And if the problem persists, send me an email.

  6. Is there any chance that you will be porting this over to a stable iPad version? 2x mode has horrible res and there is no response to orientation changes. I’m only speaking for myself, but I’m sure many would agree, I would buy the app again. Rather than it being a free upgrade for iPad. I love this app and use it religiously. It would be nice to not have to use it on iPhone and still get all of the features like landscape orientation.

  7. yeah it was actually a network problem, i think… sometimes closing and opening winvnc solves not connecting too. Hopefully it was just bad router, i use this app daily for home theater.

Could you transition to not relying on bonjour?

  8. Has anybody else spotted that the iPad Plan blog entry and associated comments have now been deleted!!

I can only assume they were unhappy by the negative feedback about failing to communicate and update their users. That and the fact they’re trying to delete/rewrite history to remove all commitment to such a version.

Well an iPad version was a nice dream, while it lasted …..
